Focus on Galvanic Corrosion

A lightweight barrier
Our dielectric nonwovens provide an extremely uniform, lightweight barrier to prevent the occurrence of galvanic corrosion in aircraft and automotive components. In composites galvanic corrosion can occur when two dissimilar conductive materials, such as a carbon reinforcement and aluminium honeycomb, come into contact in the presence of an electrolyte (such as water). This creates a pathway for electron transfer and results in surface corrosion and extensive pitting of the structure, which, if undetected, may cause structural failure. The issue is not limited to aluminium and can occur with other metals and alloys, such as steel or stainless steel, in certain environmental conditions. Our lightweight dielectric nonwovens are used to prevent galvanic corrosion. They are incorporated between the carbon and aluminium, separating them. The dielectric veil acts as an electrically isolating layer, providing a barrier to galvanic corrosion by preventing the electrochemical reaction and stopping the degradation of the structure.
